Dog Friendly Summer Getaway

I love New York in the summer but even Brooklyn can get too hot and humid making me crave a sea or lakeside escape. Last week I started researching dog-friendly trips for a weekend getaway in August. I had my heart set on a New England beach vacation after leaning Provincetown was recently named Dogtown USA and seeing how Cape Cod ranked high on the list of dog-friendly resort areas. After factoring in drive times it was back to the drawing board. I’ll save this idea for when we have more time to spend.

Some more research led me to two super dog-friendly spots: The Paw House Inn in Vermont and the Inn at Lake Joseph in the Catskills. Here’s the scoop on these places in case you’re also planning an escape from the city. Wondering which place we booked for our August getaway? You’ll just have to wait and read the review.

Paw House Inn
A historic country house turned bed and breakfast. The rooms are furnished with special beds for dogs and four-legged guests have full run of the house except for the dining room.  Activities include an agility course on the grounds, an  outdoor “dog-in” theater and nearby hiking and swimming for dogs and their humans. On site doggie day care is included in the cost.

Inn at Lake Joseph
A country estate on a 250 acre private lake surrounded by forest. There are tons of trails to explore with your pooch as well as a designated swimming area for dogs. The rooms have plenty of creature comforts for humans such as whirlpool tubs, private sun decks and fire pits. Nearby dog-friendly activities include visits to wineries and lots of outdoorsy fun.
