The 1935 Brooklyn Dog and Horse Parade

Brooklynites have always loved their pets. In 1935, the borough held a Dog and Horse Parade sponsored by the ASPCA and Brooklyn Daily Eagle to celebrate companion animals. The Eagle’s coverage of the event claimed that Brooklyn had the largest dog population in the United States and the happiest dogs in the world. I say they’re still the happiest dogs and we should bring back the parade! Visit Brooklynology to learn more about the parade and Brooklyn back in the day. Brooklynology is the blog of the Brooklyn Collection, Brooklyn Public Library’s local history division and archive.
