Feeling frustrated and hopeless about the oil spill? There’s something you and your dog can do to help the cleanup effort. Brooklyn dog walking service, Mobile Mutts is holding a fur drive throughout the month of June. They will collect as much dog fur/hair as possible and send it to Matter of Trust, a non profit that makes hair booms to soak up oil from the Gulf spill and smaller spills worldwide. Dog hair is more effective at soaking up oil than human or synthetic hair. It also breaks down faster and releases less toxins than synthetic hair when incinerated or landfilled.
The next time you brush your dog or take them to get groomed, save the fur in a ziplock bag. No amount is too big or small. If Mobile Mutts walks your pooch, simply leave a ziplock out for your walker to collect. Anyone can also stop by their office at 257 3rd avenue between Union and President on weekdays from 10:30am to 6:30pm to drop off fur. Shipments will be mailed on June 15 and 30. Big kudos to Mobile Mutts!
UPDATE: Monster Mutt has joined the drive, so people can drop off fur at their location as well. Monster Mutt is at 297 Warren Street (Monday – Friday 8am – 8pm; Saturday, Sunday & Holidays 10am – 6pm).
